City of Pietarsaari

Sampling year: 2000–2002

Sample media: humus: concentrated nitric acid extraction from the <2 mm grain-size fraction; topsoil (0–15 cm) and subsoil (15–30 cm): aqua regia extractable concentrations from the <2 mm grain-size fraction

Land use: Samples represent natural soil (till) and urban areas.

Åbo Akademi University has studied soil geochemical baseline concentrations around the city of Pietarsaari. Humus samples and basal till samples were taken from 18 sites within the city and from 19 sites around the city. In addition, 32 topsoil and subsoil samples were taken from urban areas. Analytical samples were combined from 3–5 subsamples in the field. The grain-size fraction <2 mm was applied in the analysis. Aqua regia extraction was used for mineral samples, while humus samples were extracted using concentrated nitric acid.
