The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) has investigated geochemical
baseline concentrations downtown Tampere.
Altogether, 360 topsoil samples were collected from the urban areas in 2012.
The sample sites represented various land use in the urban areas. Samples were
collected from 10-cm-deep pits. Concentrations for 43 elements were analysed
after aqua regia extraction. In addition to that, carbon content and pH value
were determined from all samples. PAH and PCB concentrations were measured from
every 10th sample.
The concentrations of arsenic in urban soils were higher than the As
concentrations in most parts of Finland. The upper limit of baseline variation
in the urban soils of Tampere was 26 mg/kg. This value can be applied in the
assessment of soil contamination and remediation needs.
The upper limit of baseline variation for lead was 37.5 mg/kg in Tampere.
Concentrations higher than the threshold value 60 mg Pb/kg (Decree VNa
214/2007) were concentrated in the centre of the city. In the soil samples from
city centre the concentrations of Zn, Cd and Hg were higher compared to the other
parts of Tampere.
The concentrations of several trace elements were higher in clay soil
samples compared to the other soil parent materials. The concentrations of Bi,
Cd, Hg, Pb and S were higher in humus compared to other soil types. The coarse
grained man-made fillings had higher concentrations of Ti, W and Zr compared to
the other soil types. The concentrations of PAH and PCB compounds were low, often/usually
below the analytical detection limit.

The GTK has investigated geochemical baseline concentrations in the city centres
of the Tampere region during the TAATA project 2007–2009 in co-operations with
cities of Tampere, Nokia, Orivesi and Ylöjärvi and municipalities of Pirkkala,
Lempäälä, Vesilahti and Kangasala. Samples were taken from/in parks, house
yards, schools and day-care centres.
Aqua regia extractable concentrations and PAH and PCB concentrations were
analysed from the <2 mm grain-size fraction.
